[edit] Abstract

A recently released video shows a Utah highway patrol officer tasered Jared Massey, a family man the cop pulled over for allegedly speeding. When Massey questioned the cop about local speed limits, the cop got pissed, ordered Massey to get out of the car, and then shot him with the taser on the side of the road. The entire episode was captured on the cop's dashboard video camera. Massey forced the police to release to him a copy of the video, which he then posted on youtube. View the video below:

In most cases, victims of taser abuse are legally powerless to fight back against the abuse. Often it is the victims word against that of the police officer, and courts will always take a cop's word over a civilian's. However, with the massive growth of portable video cameras (cell phones, dash board cams, security cams, etc) many of these 'taser attacks' by police have been captured on video and released to the public. All of a sudden, Taser abuse videos are everywhere in the public realm, and as a result of the public disgust at videos like the one above, politicians may finally take action.

In this particular case, the release of the taser video seems to be helping Massey get justice. Because the video was released publically and the resulting public outcry, Utah police spokesman said: "We have an internal investigation going on. ... With it coming out on YouTube, we have expedited the investigation." Makes one wonder if what sort of internal investigation would have gone on without the public release of the video.
