[edit] Abstract

An official for Sony Entertainment Canada expects more batches of PS3s to be shipped in from China & Japan, starting next week. By year end, the number of new PS3s available for sale should match the amount available last Friday during the products initial release.

After much anticipation, hype and fanfare, Sony's lastest gaming platform the Play Station 3 debuted to sold out crowds last Friday at retail shops across North America. Sony executives say that there were around 400,000 PS3 units for sale across north American (about 8% of which went to Canadian stores).

Due to long line ups and limited number of units per store, most units were sold as soon as each shop opened.

Matt Levitan, a executive at Sony Entertainment Canada said more units are being shipped in from Asia, and the units will probably be shipped directly to stores - by passing Sony warehouses they hope to shorten delivery times. This is the first of 4 or 5 expected batches of PS3s to be shipped to North America - each about 100,000 or 1/4 of the number of units available at the initial release of the platform.

There are also reports that due to increased online traffic of customers looking for PS3 info, many retailers websites were shutdown or unavailable as their servers could not handle the increased load.
