[edit] Abstract

Scientists in the UK have applied for a 3 year license that would allow them to fuse human DNA into cow eggs in order to harvest stem cells for use in human medicine research.

[edit] Details

Researchers want to make human-cow hybrid embryos as a source for stem cells. The embryos would only be allowed to form for a few days before being destroyed and having its stem cells harvested.

Stem cell research is the most promissing field of study in medicine, but has been mired in ethical questions as currently stem cells have only been harvested from aborted human embryos. Scientists argue that their technique of using cow eggs (of which there are plenty) spliced with a small bit of human DNA allows the creation of usable stem cells without requiring human eggs.

The researchers hope to learn some insight into how the stem cells are formed and eventually to be able to make stem cells without requiring any animal eggs.
