[edit] Abstract
Jack Layton, leader of the NDP, meets today with Prime Minister Steven Harper today to offer an NDP 'Green Plan' to replace the failed conservative 'Green Plan' in exchange for NDP support for the minority government.
[edit] Details
In a live news conference this morning Jack Layton made public the New Democratice Parties' "Green Plan", a private members bill which he intends to replace the recently released Conservative government's "Green Plan". The NDP plan includes concrete goals and measures to met, starting with regulations within a year, and including a series of 5 year goals and planned regulations. The long term goal is to reduce green house gas emissions to levels below those of the 1990s by 2050.
This deal comes as support for the Conservative's 'Green Plan' continues to slip. By offering the Conservative government support in exchange for their 'Green Plan' to be passed into law, the NDP hope to push their influence on the minority government in much the same way as they did to support the previous Liberal government's last budget in exchange for a number of NDP ammendments to the budget. During that time, current Prime Minister Steven Harper was the leader of the opposition and made many negative remarks about the Liberal government for making a deal with the NDP to save itself.
Today, its still unclear if Steven Harper feels that support for his government has slipped to the point where he must accept a deal from the NDP.
