[edit] Details
The Mars Global Surveyor has been in orbit around the red planet for nearly a decade, taking thousands of images and giving us a better picture of Mars than we had before. Now, NASA scientists have lost contact with orbiter, not having heard any signals from it for more than two weeks.
The Surveyor completed its mission more than 8 years ago, but remained a useful tool for learning more about the Red Planet.
NASA still hopes to locate the Surveyor in orbit, despite recent attempts to spot it in orbit from the new Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter that failed.
In a news conference recently, the lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program, Michael Meyer, said "We may have lost a dear old friend and teacher."
