Scientists discover a master heart stem cell that gives rise to the three main types of heart cells.

Working in three separate teams, scientists in the US have identified a specific type of stem cell that can form into any of the three types of heart cells (muscle cells, lining cells, and endothelial cells). It was previously thought that each of the heart cell types had their own specific stem cell.

The work was done with mice, but the conclusions apply to all mammals. The hope is that one day this research will lead to better heart therapies for humans.
