[edit] Details

Scientists have discovered massive amounts of frozen water ice at the South Pole of Mars. They believe these deposits, at some points as thick as 2.3 miles in parts, would be enough to cover the entire surface of Mars with dozens of feet of water if thawed. The discovery comes as scientists continue to analyze radar collected by the European Space Agency Mars Express orbiter during 2005 and 2006.

Recently, similar scans of the North Pole of Mars have been performs, and scientists report that initial analysis of that data suggests similar deposits at the North Pole as well.

Water is necessary for life as we know it. For decades scientists have claimed that free water once flowed across Mars - but for evidence they could only point to the geograhpic features on Mars that LOOK like they may have been created by flowing woater. This latest discovery shows where at least some of that old water now lies.

Masive water deposits also encourage those daring souls wanting to send humans to Mars and to eventually colonize and possibly terraform Mars into a planet hospitable for humans. The water could also prove useful for the creation of fuel for spacecraft - a kind of refueling station for the solar system.
