Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, president of Iran, has offered to host a 3 way summmit with Iraq and Syria in an attempt to control the violence in Iraq and to find a way to help Iraq find security.
US critics have argued that Syria has done little to nothing to stop the tide of armed anti-US militants from crossing the Syrian border, bringing weapons and fighters into war torn Iraq. It is possible that Iran is in a position to help stem the violence in Iraq via diplomatic means more so than the Americans via their armed forces as it can help put pressure on Syria to get their cooperation.
Other criticise the move by Iran as trying to 'upstage' the US's plans to hold talks with countries in the regions surrounding Iraq.
The conference to said to take place this weekend, but there are still conflicting reports of exactly when this 3 way summit will take place.
