[edit] Abstract
In a desperate bid to block scientific evidence refuting creationism from being displayed, Bishop Boniface Adoyo of Kenya's evangelical sect has called for a boycott of a museum’s display showing the Turkana Boy - the most complete set of remains of any prehistoric human.

Worried that the scientific evidence, which directly conflicts with the core beliefs of evangelicals - that God created man (creationism, as opposed to evolution) - will 'kill [their] faith', Adoyo demanded that Kenya's national museum store the remains in a back room, with a notice saying evolution is not a fact.
Richard Leakey, world renowned fossil hunter and discoverer of the Turkana Boy, told the press in response to the Bishop's demands that "Whether the bishop likes it or not, Turkana Boy is a distant relation of his", and "The bishop is descended from the apes and these fossils tell how he evolved".
The entire collection of bones, fossils and other remains at the National Museum has been called the clearest and unrivaled record of evolution to date.
The theory of Evolution, which has been all but universally accepted as truth and as the explanation for the origin of man, contradicts the account given in the Bible that God created the world in 6 days (although Bishop Adoyo says he believes each biblical day to be about 1000 earth years long?). The pre-historic remains and the tried-and-true methods of dating such things clearly point to a much longer history of mankind on Earth - and one in which we slowly evolved from single-celled creatures into what we are today - over millions of years.
Worried that the evangelicals will turn to violence in the face of contradictory evidence of their beliefs (wouldn't be the first time, would it?), the Museum has stepped up security and protected the most important and 'controversial' remains behind additional barriers.
[edit] Editorial
Why is this still a story in 2007? While evolution has been accepted by scientists around the world (except some of the southern states in the USA - go figure), there have still be a few people calling themselves scientists who argue against evolution and all the evidence. They are all religious folk, trying to convince themselves that what they were taught (and what THEY now teach) in Sunday school is still the universal truth. They struggle to make sense of the non-sensible fiction of creationism by reinterpreting the text of their bible in stranger and stranger ways.
Perhaps it is merely that the people in these religions have had their heads comfortably stuck in the sand, and the more the sand washes away, the more furious they try to bury it again. By intentionally not looking at all the evidence available and deciding for themselves, these people swallow what they are told without question.
Perhaps its not any individual follower's fault - they are merely following their self-proclaimed religious superiors’ orders - something they have been told to do all their religious lives. They decide not by examining the facts and denying evolution, but because their Bishop has told them so. In this case it is the Bishop of Kenya calling for the boycott of the offending evidence of evolution. He even claimed that the evidence would kill their faith. Remember, if all the evangelicals in Kenya were to come around to the truth of evolution and see the lies they have been told their whole lives, the Bishop would lose HIS flock - lose HIS power over people - lose HIS job, with all the comforts and luxuries that come with the position. Perhaps THATS why this is still a story in 2007?
Perhaps its time for people to decide for themselves. This is why universal schooling should be mandatory - and that is also why all religious pre- or mis- conceptions must be kept outside the school yard and classrooms. Its time for silly none sensible debates, boycotts and threats against evolution to be put into a backroom of a museum - with a notice saying creationism is pure fiction?
