[edit] Abstract
The morning after the midterm elections in which the Democratic Party made significant gains against the Republican party, President Bush annouced Donald Rumsfeld was stepping down as US Defence Secretary.
[edit] Details
The Democratic Party won control of the House of Representatives and, pending the final count, perhaps the Senate as well in yesterdays midterm elections. In what is seen as direct reaction for the poor showing of the Republicans in the polls, President Bush announced Donald Rumsfeld was stepping down as US Defence Secretary, and that he would be replaced by Former CIA Director Robert Gates.
Bush called Rumsfeld a "patriot who served his country with honour and distinction".
Bush's appointed replacement must still be confirmed in the senate, but due to the urgency of filling the post of Defence Secretary, it is possible that the confirmation hearings might held before the handover of power to the Democrats.
