[edit] Abstract
US Democratic senators list raising the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 as one of their top priorities in the new year.
[edit] Details
In an outline of their intentions for the new year, Democrats in the senate echo those in the house calling for a quick increase in the minimum wage. Some proposals have the increase occuring over a two year period.
Critics of raising the minimum wage argue it will increase unemployment and decrease the rate of the creation of new jobs, as employers get stuck with the higher wages.
Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts pointed out that the minimum wage has been stuck at $5.15 for almost a decade.
The Democrats take over majority power in both the Senate and the House in the new year, and raising the minimum wage is high on their list.
