Charles Rangel, the New York Democratic Representative and soon-to-be chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee said bringing back the draft in US would not only increase the numbers of armed forces, but also deter the politicians from rushing into wars when there is a chance that their own children will be sent to war.

Under this proposed draft, all Americans would sign up after turning 18. Rangel hopes that the universality of the draft would have policy makers thinking twice before sending a military to war that may contain their own children.

This is not the first time Rangel has proposed a draft. He believes now is the time to re-create the draft as there is a demand for more troops in Iraq now, and to increase numbers for possible future actions in Iran and North Korea.

The draft was never a popular concept amoung the general population. With approval ratings low for the Iraq war, it is doubtful that Americans will accept a draft to force more of them into service and into action.
