[edit] Details
On January 5th Martin Lee Anderson fell to the ground in the Bay County Sheriff's Boot Camp front yard. He was complaning of shortness of breath, but the guards pushed and hit him to continue his run around the yard with other new inmates. Eventually Anderson fell again and did not get up.
The guards at the boot camp pushed him, hit him, kneeled on him, yelled at him, poured water over him and used smelling salts to get him to get up. A nurse on the scene checked Anderson's vitals at least once before allowing the guards to continue their treatment.
Somewhere during that 'treatment', Martin Lee Anderson died. Initial local autopsy concluded that Anderson had died of naturally of a complication with a sickle cell condition.
However, the incident was taped and made public. A second autopsy was done which concluded that Anderson suffocated as a result of the guards restraining him.
Now, the 7 guards and 1 nurse who participated in the incident have been charged with aggravated manslaughter, and if found guilty could face up to 30 years in prison.
